Biblical Leadership at Witbank Baptist Church

Introduction

At Witbank Baptist Church, we believe that Christ alone is the Head of His church (Ephesians 1:22; Colossians 1:18). In His grace, He gives leaders to equip the saints for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:11–12).

Our leadership structure reflects a biblical pattern:

  • A plurality of elders who shepherd and teach
  • Deacons who serve with practical care

This structure is not merely organizational—it’s how Christ lovingly provides for and leads His people.

Understanding the Roles

Elders (Presbyteros · Overseer · Pastor)

Biblical Function:
Elders are called to shepherd the flock, guard sound doctrine, and provide spiritual oversight. Scripture uses the terms elder, pastor, and overseer interchangeably to describe this role (Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 5:2–3; Titus 1:5–9).

Key Scriptures:

  • “Shepherd the flock of God that is among you… being examples to the flock.” — 1 Peter 5:2–3

  • “He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught…” — Titus 1:9

Deacons (Diakonos)

Biblical Function:
Deacons serve the church through practical ministry—caring for needs, supporting church functions, and freeing elders to focus on prayer and teaching (Acts 6:1–4; 1 Timothy 3:8–13).

Key Scriptures:

  • “Let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.” — 1 Timothy 3:10

  • “Those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing…” — 1 Timothy 3:13

A Note to the Church

We invite you to pray faithfully for our elders and deacons as they serve Christ and His church with integrity, humility, and joy. Leadership is not about position but about loving, protecting, and equipping the body of Christ for His glory.
“Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.” — Hebrews 13:7
